The Southside arts community has mourned Coweta artist Barbara Scruggs since her passing in June. Fellow artists have held a variety of tributes as a testament to Scruggs’ invaluable contribution to the entire Southern Crescent arts scene.

Scruggs was active in the Southern Crescent Alliance of Visual Artists (SCAVA), including serving as its President in 2004 and 2007. As such, it is fitting that the final show in SCAVA’s Traveling Exhibit will be held in Newnan, in honor of Scruggs.

Sponsored by the Newnan Coweta Art Association (NCAA), the opening reception for the exhibit will be Thursday, December 6, from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Espresso Lane Coffee Shop on the Court Square in downtown Newnan. Espresso Lane is the official gallery of the NCAA. Themed exhibits of paintings by member artists are exhibited monthly.

Scruggs was also an active member of NCAA for many years, contributing her talents in a variety of ways. She served as President of the organization and also, for several years, acted as its delegate to the Newnan-Coweta Arts Council.

Thursday night’s opening reception is free, and the public is invited to attend. Artists and friends will speak about Scruggs and her dedication and tireless support for Southside arts. In a great Newnan setting filled with art and artists, the tribute is sure to be one Barbara would’ve liked!

The Newnan-Coweta Art Association was incorporated June 18, 1968. Today it is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to encourage and aid artists to produce original works of art of every type and character, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, ceramics, wood craft, drawing and metal crafts; furnish the auspices for the display of such works in Coweta County and elsewhere; foster education and instruction in the creation and appreciation of works of art. The association supports the arts in Coweta schools through annual donations and scholarships to high school students pursuing the arts in college. The Newnan-Coweta Art Association can be found online at www.Newcaa.com.
